Fire-Resistant (FR) ceilings
What is a fire-resistant ceiling?
A fire-resistant ceiling ensures safety and comfort in premises subject to strict fire regulations. Fire resistance, fire stability, and fire resistance ratings (REI) are numerous terms, and they don't all cover the same concepts!
Fire resistance refers to the length of time during which building elements can maintain their initial function despite the action of a fire, thus ensuring that ceiling elements do not fall.
"Fire Stability"
Fire stability refers to the ability of building elements to maintain their initial function despite a fire, thus preventing the ceiling elements from falling. In France and Belgium, there are two types of classification to assess this resistance:
- REI classification: Used when the suspended ceiling serves as a protective screen for structures, according to European standard EN 13501-2.
- FR classification: Applied when the suspended ceiling does not protect the structures but must maintain its mechanical stability in the event of fire, preventing any elements from falling. This is the case for metal ceilings.
Products providing safety and comfort for specific premises
The safety and comfort of occupants are key issues, taken into account during the construction and renovation of premises. Because it is essential to have safe and reliable systems, allowing the evacuation of people at all times in places that could be subject to fire: PLAFOMETAL offers 4 modular ceiling systems that are fire resitant(FR) and remain in place for at least 30 minutes without falling (provided that the installation complies with the test report).
Their regulation
In France, the decree of March 22, 2004 (annex 1 § 2.5) describes tests to characterize fire stability performance, requiring a minimum of FR 1/4h. Plafometal offers four FR 1/2h metal ceiling systems that meet and exceed these regulations, particularly for common clearances in high-rise buildings (HRB):
- Monobac FR: Clip-In cassette system on a concealed support, fire-resistant.
- PM8 Hooks SF: Tray system installed on a smooth support, fire-resistant.
- PM8 FR: Tray system installed on an angle iron, fire-resistant.
- Orial FR Plafometal: Tray system tilting on two sides, fire-resistant.
In Belgium, the NBN 713-020 standard requires tests to assess the fire stability performance SF 30 min. Plafometal offers three metal ceiling systems that meet this regulation for evacuation routes, premises accessible to the public and collective kitchens:
- Monobac FR: Clip-In cassette system on a concealed support, fire-resistant.
- PM8 Hooks FR: Tray system installed on a smooth support, fire-resistant.
- PM8 FR : Tray system installed on an angle iron, fire-resistant.
Laboratory tests
Plafometal performs all fire stability tests in certified and independent laboratories, such as CSTB and EFECTIS in France, and WarringtonFireGent in Belgium. Contact us to obtain the certificates, classification, and test reports.
Implementation
In addition to complying with DTU 58-1, the installation of fire-resistant metal ceilings must strictly comply with the reports, classification reports, and extensions (available upon request).
The ceiling must not support any load other than its own weight. Equipment such as lighting, ventilation, sound systems, signs, etc., may be attached to the main or secondary structure of the building using hangers passing through the ceiling with minimal play. In this case, the secondary structure must be assessed according to current standards and with reference to the CSTB report, either by hot test or by calculation.
